About MAAWG
The purpose of MAAWG is to bring the messaging industry together to work collaboratively and successfully address forms of messaging abuse such as messaging spam, virus attacks, denial-of-service attacks, and other forms of abuse. To accomplish this, MAAWG is developing initiatives in the three areas needed to resolve the messaging abuse problem: Collaboration, Technology, and Public Policy.
This solution will emanate from these three areas:

Here are some of the reasons why other companies are joining MAAWG:
- MAAWG is the only organization viewing the messaging abuse problem holistically.
The areas of technology, industry collaboration, and public policy must be addressed systematically to effectively address the problem. Addressing anything less will result in an incomplete solution.
- MAAWG is the only organization designed to address messaging abuse in both the
wireline and mobile industries.
It is vital that "messaging" be viewed more holistically than "just email". New forms of messaging (e.g.: SMS, MMS, PAP) are rapidly evolving in different industries. The success of these new services will be heavily dependent on their ability to reach users through different devices and different networks. The market proliferation and interaction of various messaging services creates new avenues for abuse that must be guarded against. This requires technical, collaborative and public policy work stretching across the wireline and mobile industries.
- MAAWG is a global organization.
Not only does the messaging abuse problem stretch across industries, but it also reaches across boundaries. Addressing a single geographic region will not solve the problem. It requires working together across geographic regions in the areas of technology, collaboration, and public policy.
- MAAWG has deep technological depth much needed in an environment of
SMTP re-definition
With many new sender authentication protocols being evaluated (e.g.: RMX, DRIP, DMP, SPF and Caller ID, etc.), MAAWG has the technical depth needed to evaluate and assess which ones are best for its constituents.
-
MAAWG is designed to be an open organization, driven by the membership and the needs
of the industry.
Membership will be open. Service providers, vendors and others are encouraged to join and participate in working together to effectively addressing the messaging abuse problem.
- MAAWG will work collaboratively with other industry
organizations
MAAWG will liaise with key organizations (ex: IETF-ASRG, OMA) to ensure MAAWG requirements are addressed in the development of these protocols.
